Domaine de Trevallon - Les Alpilles Rouge 2019
Carved into the northern slopes of Provence’s Alpilles are the spectacularly beautiful vineyards of Domaine de Trévallon. The vines are planted into the hillsides’ steep, chalky, white limestone soil, making the mountains that protect them look as if they are always covered in snow. The jagged, toothy peaks of the Alpilles form a natural barrier between southern France’s Camargue to the south and the bustling city of Avignon to the north.
Organic - 50% syrah, 50% cabernet Sauvignon. Limestone and clay soil, very stony: Hauterivian et Barremian, second stage of the lower Cretaceous, less than 130 million years. No de-stemming, yeasting or sulphur. Ageing 24 months in foudres and barrels. No filtration before bottling
Opaque purple colour. Exotic and rich cassis on the nose, layered with a little incense and pepper. The palate is dense and intense, driven by explosive black fruit at the core. A real powerhouse with mouthcoating tannins, richly textured and muscular. There is superb freshness to complement this power, bright acidity and flecks of violet and pepper make for a harmonious effort. Very long on the finish, with superb ageing potential.
