Domaine de Trevallon - Les Alpilles Rouge Magnum 2017
Carved into the northern slopes of Provence’s Alpilles are the spectacularly beautiful vineyards of Domaine de Trévallon. The vines are planted into the hillsides’ steep, chalky, white limestone soil, making the mountains that protect them look as if they are always covered in snow. The jagged, toothy peaks of the Alpilles form a natural barrier between southern France’s Camargue to the south and the bustling city of Avignon to the north.
Organic - 50% syrah, 50% cabernet Sauvignon. Limestone and clay soil, very stony: Hauterivian et Barremian, second stage of the lower Cretaceous, less than 130 million years. No de-stemming, yeasting or sulphur. Ageing 24 months in foudres and barrels. No filtration before bottling
The 2017 Alpilles Rouge is flat-out delicious. Ripe, plummy and forward, the 2017 offers tremendous immediacy. If I didn’t know how well Trévallon ages, I would be tempted to set an earlier drinking window, but the best is clearly yet to come. Next to other vintages that display a good bit of ripeness, the 2017 remains medium in body and silky. Sweet red berry fruit, flowers, cedar and earthy notes lead into the vibrant, translucent finish.
