Usiglian del Vescovo - Terre di Pisa Il Barbiglione
Set in the gentle hills of Valdera, in the municipality of Palaia, Usiglian del Vescovo owes its name to the dispute that took place in the 11th century between the Bishop of Pisa and the Bishop of Lucca. While the latter owned the Municipality, the Bishop of Pisa owned the Village Castle of Usigliano. Today, the Organic certified estate covers about 160 hectares in total, 25 of which are vineyards and 15 are olive groves. The vineyards benefit from perfect exposures within the vicinity of the main building. Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Chardonnay and Viognier are rooted in various sandy loamy soils, rich in marine fossils. Viticulture is organic. Winemaking combines a traditional and modern approach. The resulting wines are fresh, lively, captivating, full of sun with a Mediterranean Coast salty edge.
Organic - 75% Syrah, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot. Hand harvested in small crates followed by manual sorting. The grapes are destemmed, crushed, and vinified separately. Blending and malolactic in concrete tanks. Aged 12 months in a combination of new and used oak barrels, plus an additional 12 months once bottled.
