Established in 1982 by Guido Fantino and Claudio Conterno, the winery is scenically set overlooking the most ancient part of the medieval village of Monforte d’Alba, with a sweeping view of the majestic Southern Alps. Becoming quickly a cult classic, Conterno Fantino is one of the top producers of the region. The new generation has now taken over the 27 hectare organically farmed estate. The philosophy is still based on a modern approach promoting respect for the environment (biodynamic principles for vineyard management, solar panels and geothermal systems in the cellars), and ambitious wine making: manual harvest in small crates, spontaneous fermentations with indigenous yeast, French oak barrels for ageing, and minimal use of sulfites. The resulting wines are enticing, dense, deep, and elegant, amongst the most refined in Piedmont.

Organic / biodynamic. Blend of Barbera grown in Ginestra, Bussia Sottana, Mosconi, Pajana and Ornati. Hand harvested. Indigenous yeasts. Ten day fermentation/maceration in horizontal rotating stainless steel fermenters. Aged for 7 months in French oak barrels, plus an additional 4 months in the bottle before release.

Plush, juicy and inviting, all qualities that make it an excellent choice for drinking now and over the next few years. Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, smoke, licorice and new leather build in this racy, dense full bodied wine. The acidity is supportive and makes it a great wine with food.

Organic / biodynamic. 50% barbera, 50% nebbiolo from various sites with a steep terroir of limestone, marl and sand. Varietals vinified and aged in French oak barrels for 18 months separately then blended for the final cuvée.

Fruity, deep and inviting. Raspberry jam, spice, new French oak and floral notes are pushed forward in a racy, voluptuous Piedmontese red that will drink well right out of the gate.

The resulting wines are enticing, dense, deep, and elegant, amongst the most refined in Piedmont.

Organic / biodynamic. 100% Nebbiolo from Sori Ginestra and Castelletto crus. Aged ten months in used French oak barrels. Ginestra is a historical cru of 10 hectares situated at an altitude between 300 and 350 metres, arranged on steep slopes, prevalently exposed to the south and in part to the south east. it is divided in several subzones. Sori Ginestra is the vineyard located right below the Hamlet of Ginestra, between Roddoli della Ginestra and Cascina Pajana. Forty year old vines rooted in a steep full south facing compact terroir composed of silt (50%), sand (28%), and clay (22%). Castelletto is a large and steep vineyard located between Monforte d’Alba and the frazione of Perno along the confines of Serralunga d’Alba. Vigna Pressenda is a subzone of Castellotto, right in the middle of the Hill, that features older marls from Lequio Formation.

Bold, racy and perfumed, with lovely depth. Sweet floral notes meld into a core of dark stone fruits, lavender, menthol and sage. Firm, incisive tannins support expressive pine, black cherry and spice notes. This is a baby Barolo that can be enjoyed now.

Organic / biodynamic - 100% nebbiolo. Castelletto is a large and steep vineyard located between Monforte d’Alba and the frazione of Perno along the confines of Serralunga d’Alba. Vigna Pressenda is a subzone of Castellotto, right in the middle of the Hill, that features older marls from Lequio Formation

This is very structured with fantastic tannins that frame the wine. Dark fruit with ripe strawberries, as well as wet earth and dried black truffles. Full and chewy. Tight finish. Needs four or five years to open. Try after 2025.
96 James Suckling

The 2017 Barolo Castelletto Vigna Pressenda is a gorgeous, exotic wine. Rose petal, orange peel, cinnamon, cedar and red berry fruit all open in a beautifully layered, super-expressive Barolo from Conterno-Fantino. Beams of Castelletto tannin extend the finish while lending a real feeling of vibrancy throughout. The balance of purity and structure is compelling.
94 Vinous

Vanilla, resin and eucalyptus aromas give way to cherry, plum, iron and tobacco flavors in this well-structured red, which is balanced and resonant on the long finish, needing time to absorb the oak. Best from 2025 through 2042.

Pale ruby in hue with a dense colour, full of intriguing leafy lightness with fresh mint, pomegranate and rosehip. This shines for its elegance. A concentration of citrus and darker fruits overlay fresh acidity and solid, muscular tannins which are typical of Ginestra - in my experience this Sorì can be even more austere in the best vintages. Hailed as a warm vintage, the 2017 here expresses an extraordinary freshness with a citrus finish. Outstanding ageing potential.
97 Decanter

Barolo Ginestra Vigna Sorì Ginestra is another gorgeous, expressive wine in this range. Broad and ample, the 2017 captures all of the personality of this site. Dark-fleshed fruit, spice, menthol, licorice, espresso, dried flowers and pine infuse the 2017 with myriad layers of dimension. There is plenty of Ginestra energy and tannin, so a few years of cellaring is a must.

Scenically set on top of Monforte d’alba with a sweeping view of the majestic Alps, Conterno Fantino is one of the leading producers of the area. They organically farmed 27 hectares. The philosophy is based on a modern approach promoting respect for the environment (biodynamic principles for vineyard management, solar panels and geothermal systems in the cellars), and ambitious wine making. The resulting wines are enticing, dense, deep, and elegant, amongst the most refined in Piedmont, sought-after by wine collectors around the world. Organic / biodynamic - 100% nebbiolo. Mosconi cru is a large zone adjacent to Ginestra. It is divided in two areas: Conterni and Mosconi. Vigna Ped is a subzone of Mosconi (triangular haped vineyard looking at the maps). Fifty year old vines rooted in a south terroir composed of calcareous clay marl soils from the tertiary period, with areas rich in calcium carbonate and iron.
