Barolo Conterno Fantino

Conterno Fantino: Sustainable Winemaking in the Heart of Barolo

Founded in 1982 by long-time friends Claudio Conterno and Guido Fantino, Conterno Fantino is located in Monforte d’Alba, a historic village in the prestigious Barolo DOCG zone of Piedmont, Italy. Today, the winery cultivates 27 hectares of vineyards, producing around 150,000 bottles annually, primarily from four key grape varieties: Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, and Chardonnay. The estate is renowned for its flagship Barolo Sori Ginestra, produced from the prized Ginestra vineyard, known for its perfect southern exposure and rich marl and limestone soils, which give the wine exceptional structure and aging potential.

Terroir and Geology

The vineyards of Conterno Fantino are situated in one of the most important hills in Barolo, where the soils are primarily marl, limestone, and clay, dating back to the Miocene epoch. This geological composition contributes to the elegance and longevity of their Barolo wines, especially those from Sori Ginestra. The estate’s location at higher altitudes with a favorable southern exposure allows the Nebbiolo vines to absorb sunlight throughout the day, enhancing the ripening process and ensuring optimal quality.

Commitment to Sustainability

Conterno Fantino is deeply committed to environmental sustainability. The vineyards have been certified organic since 2008, and the winery employs various eco-friendly practices, such as solar panels, a geothermal system, and an innovative wetland used for wastewater purification. These efforts reflect the estate’s philosophy of respecting and preserving the land for future generations.
