Château de Marsannay – Gevrey 1er Bel Air

Since 2012 Château de Marsannay has been owned by the Halley family, at the same time they bought the Château de Meursault. They own 34 hectares of superbly situated vines, and as with Château de Meursault, have invested heavily in realising the estate’s huge potential. The Domaine is managed by Château de Meursault’s Stephane Follin-Arbelet, who is overseeing a quality revolution, but Château de Marsannay have their own winemaking team, lead by the fantastic, and award winning, Sylvain Pabion. Winemaking is classic and adaptive, largely de-stalked but with whole bunches when necessary, a cold-soaked prior to fermentation and then ageing in a mixture of new and used oak barriques for over a year. Alongside Château de Meursault, this is on course to become one of the largest organic certified estates in the Côte d’Or.

Organic. Replanted in the 1970’s, this plot is bordered by two Grands Crus (Beze and Ruchottes) and the pine forest above it. The cooler mesoclimate in this elevated vineyard makes for a leaner, less-concentrated wine than the Grand Crus, but nevertheless with good balance and elegant red fruit characters. 100% pinot noir. Aged 15 months in a French oak barrels (40% new).

Aromatic, lifted fresh red berry fruit characterises this wine; breezy and refreshing notes of alpine berry, loganberry and cherry skip across the palate. Airy, alive and graceful, this is a charming Gevrey that leaves your palate energised. A fabulous Premier Cru situated at the top of the hill just above Ruchottes-Chambertin. Stony soils in a lofty position close to the woods, and an east/south-east exposition yield
a racy, fresh elegant style of Gevrey.
