Domaine Henri & Gilles Buisson: A Pioneer in Organic Winemaking in Burgundy

Located in the village of Saint-Romain, in the Côte de Beaune, Domaine Henri & Gilles Buisson is a family-owned estate with a rich history dating back to the 12th century. The domaine began bottling its own wines in 1947 when Henri Buisson recognized the potential of Saint-Romain’s terroir. Today, the estate is managed by the third generation, Franck and Frédérick Buisson, who have continued their family’s tradition while embracing organic and biodynamic farming practices, ensuring that their wines reflect the purity of the land.

Terroir and Vineyards

Domaine Henri & Gilles Buisson farms 14 hectares of vineyards across Saint-Romain, Corton, Pommard, and Meursault. The estate’s high-altitude vineyards benefit from limestone-rich soils that lend minerality and freshness to the wines. The cooler temperatures in Saint-Romain result in wines with vibrant acidity, while the clay-limestone soils of Corton and Pommard produce structured and age-worthy reds. The domaine’s commitment to organic farming, which began in the 1970s, led to full certification in 2009, and their vineyards are now worked biodynamically.

Sustainable Winemaking

The Buisson family employs sustainable winemaking techniques, including biodiversity preservation, composting vine prunings, and organic treatments to maintain the health of the soils. In the cellar, they use minimal intervention to allow the natural expression of each vineyard. Their wines, particularly from Premier Cru and Grand Cru sites, are renowned for their elegance, finesse, and capacity for long-term aging.
