Caccia al Piano: A Jewel of Bolgheri’s Winemaking Tradition
Located in the prestigious Bolgheri DOC region of Tuscany, Caccia al Piano is an estate that perfectly marries history, tradition, and modern winemaking. Acquired by the Ziliani family in 2003, the estate stretches over 30 hectares, with 23 hectares dedicated to vineyards, primarily producing red Bordeaux varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. White varietals such as Vermentino and Sauvignon Blanc also thrive here, benefiting from the unique terroir of Bolgheri.
Terroir and Geology
The estate is divided into four key vineyards: San Biagio, Grottine, Cantina, and Le Bozze, each offering distinct soil compositions and microclimates. The San Biagio vineyard, situated at an altitude of 180 meters, enjoys dual exposure to southeast and southwest sunlight, with limestone-rich, clayey soils that provide the ideal conditions for producing complex, age-worthy red wines. The Grottine vineyard, with its silt and iron-rich clay soils, is particularly suited to Merlot, while the Cantina vineyard’s sandy-clay soils yield excellent Vermentino and Cabernet Sauvignon. Finally, the Le Bozze vineyard, closer to the sea, features looser, sandier soils perfect for white varietals.
Winemaking and Sustainability
Caccia al Piano prides itself on combining traditional winemaking practices with modern technology, and the winery completed a major renovation in 2014 to enhance both its aesthetic integration into the landscape and its production efficiency. Producing about 140,000 bottles annually, the winery is known for its bold red wines and elegant whites, which express the Mediterranean climate and diverse terroir of the region.
