Founded in 1998 by Zorik Gharibian, Zorah Wines has played a leading role in the revival of Armenia’s ancient winemaking heritage. Located in the rugged mountains of Vayots Dzor, the estate focuses on indigenous grape varieties and traditional methods, producing wines that connect Armenia’s rich history with a modern expression of terroir.
The Estate
Zorah was established with a vision to showcase Armenia’s unique viticultural heritage to the world. Situated near the historic Areni-1 Cave, home to the oldest known winery ever discovered, the estate has become one of the country’s most influential producers. Through careful vineyard management and a commitment to native varieties, Zorah has helped redefine perceptions of Armenian wine on the international stage.
Vineyards and Terroir
The vineyards are planted at elevations ranging from 1,400 to 1,600 metres above sea level, among the highest in the Northern Hemisphere. Volcanic and limestone-rich soils, combined with a dry continental climate and significant day-night temperature variation, produce grapes with freshness, concentration and natural balance. The estate works primarily with Areni Noir, one of the world’s oldest known grape varieties, alongside historic white varieties such as Voskehat and Garandmak.
Winemaking
Traditional Armenian karas, large clay amphorae buried underground, remain central to Zorah’s philosophy. Fermentations are carried out with native yeasts, while ageing combines amphorae and carefully selected oak to preserve purity and site expression. The approach balances respect for tradition with modern precision, allowing the character of the fruit and terroir to remain at the forefront.
Wine Style
Zorah wines are defined by freshness, texture and elegance. Areni Noir delivers vibrant red fruit, spice and silky tannins, while the whites combine floral aromatics, mineral tension and depth. Across the range, the wines reflect both the altitude and ancient heritage of Armenia’s vineyards.
