Founded in 1923 in the village of Cornaiano, Cantina Girlan is one of Alto Adige’s most respected wine producers. What began as a small cooperative of 24 growers has evolved into a community of more than 200 winegrowing families, united by a commitment to quality and the distinctive character of Northern Italy’s mountain vineyards.
The Estate
For more than a century, Cantina Girlan has played an important role in the development of Alto Adige wine. The cooperative brings together growers farming some of the region’s most sought-after vineyard sites, while maintaining a strong focus on low yields, vineyard selection and long-term sustainability. Today, Girlan is recognized internationally for producing wines that combine Alpine freshness with remarkable depth and elegance.
Vineyards and Terroir
The estate’s 230 hectares of vineyards are located throughout the Oltradige and Bassa Atesina zones at elevations ranging from 450 to 500 metres. Diverse soils of volcanic porphyry, limestone and clay provide ideal conditions for a wide range of varieties. The cool mountain climate, warm daytime temperatures and significant diurnal shifts contribute freshness, aromatic intensity and structure to the wines.
Winemaking
Fruit is harvested by hand and vinified according to the needs of each variety and vineyard site. Traditional methods are combined with modern technology in the winery’s historic cellar, allowing Girlan to preserve purity of fruit while highlighting the character of Alto Adige’s unique terroirs. Careful ageing and precise vineyard selection are central to the estate’s philosophy.
Wine Style
Girlan’s wines are known for their balance, precision and freshness. Pinot Bianco and Sauvignon Blanc offer vibrant acidity and mineral character, while Pinot Noir, Lagrein and Vernatsch combine elegance with depth.
