Pic Saint Loup
Founded in 1995, Calmel & Joseph is a premium maison de négoce specializing in Languedoc-Roussillon wines. Over the years, they have built close personal relationships with a large number of growers from all appellations (model based on Rhône specialist Tardieu Laurent), interacting with them from the initial vineyard management to bottling.
25% Syrah, 20% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre, 20% Cinsault, 15% carignan - 40 year old average vines farmed according to biodynamic principles. The region is dominated by two distinctive peaks: the Montagne de l’Hortus and the Pic St Loup. Mediterranean climate with hot and dry summers and rainy mild winters. It is a transition point from the coastal plain to the higher, inland plateau, the climate is noticeably cooler than many other Languedoc wine growing regions. Soils are predominantly limestone-marls, with poor rocky top soil recovered by a dry and wild vegetation locally called Garrigues (scrub-lands). Pic Saint-Loup in Côteaux du Languedoc produces some of the finest wines in the Midi region. Low yields of 20hl/Ha. Hand-harvested and placed in small baskets to minimize any damage whilst in transit to the winery. Varietals vinified seperately and by terroir before blending. Aged 20 months in large oak tuns. Bottled without filtration.
Notes of spice, eucalpytus, mint and liquorice on the nose, followed by more complex, secondary aromas including juniper. Excellent freshness and balance, with fine tannins, small berry fruit and spice.
