Terrasses du Larzac
Founded in 1995, Calmel & Joseph is a premium maison de négoce specializing in Languedoc-Roussillon wines. Over the years, they have built close personal relationships with a large number of growers from all appellations (model based on Rhône specialist Tardieu Laurent), interacting with them from the initial vineyard management to bottling.
50% Mourvèdre, 25% Syrah, 25% Grenache. Cryoclastic limestone gravel within a deep sandy clay soil. Hand harvested and placed in small baskets to minimize any damage whilst in transit to the winery. Fermentation lasts for 10 days at a temperature of 28°C. The wine is then left on its lees for a further 28 days to slowly extract the full potential of the grapes. Aged 12 months in oak barrel (30% new, 40% used one vintage, 30% used two vintages).
Distinctive nose: pomegranate and beetroot, orange peel, guava. Glossy intensity spreads across the palate filling all corners of the mouth with reverberating layers of flavour. Clenched with tension and intent, ambitious, beautifully balanced, tannins smouldering in the background, no single component dominating. Strong, spiced finish. Almost long, and then it just fades a tiny bit too quickly for so much delivery.’’
