Founded in 1995, Calmel & Joseph is a premium maison de négoce specializing in Languedoc-Roussillon wines. Over the years, they have built close personal relationships with a large number of growers from all appellations (model based on Rhône specialist Tardieu Laurent), interacting with them from the initial vineyard management to bottling.
50% Syrah, 30% Grenache and 20% Carignan. In order to craft a representative cuvée of what the Languedoc region has best to offer, Calmel & Joseph has selected the best terroir expressions for each of the varietals. Up against the Montagne Noire in the Minnervois region, the Syrah grows in a limestone soil. The Grenache comes from the beautiful granitic and schist soils of North West Roussillon while the Carignan thrive on red clay terroirs. The grapes are manually harvested. Partial crushing of 50% berries. Fermentation takes place at 25°- 28° C for 10 days, with two daily push-downs. No oak. Aged for 6 months in concrete vats.
Classic introductory Languedoc rouge with a medium dark red colour and a spicy, soupy nose of dried herbs (garrigue) and a mix of red and black fruits. The attack is fresh and clean with more pure blackcurrant and a savoury garrigue undercurrent. The blend is 50/30/20 syrah, grenache and carignan, each grown on different soils in different locations. The fruit is hand-picked and only partly crushed, and fermented before aging in concrete tanks for six months. It is a delicious drinking red wine that is ready to drink.
