Morgon Côte de Py Vieilles Vignes

The Gauthier  family has a long history in Beaujolais as a Mr Benoît Gauthier was already working in the vineyards of Chiroubles in 1720. The estate located in Morgon has been in the family since 1834. Laurent Gauthier, representing the 6th generation, was born in 1965 and following his viticulture diploma in 1983 he started with his own estate of 2.5 hectares. In 1991 he took over the family's estate from his parents and joined the two properties. His sons Jason and Elie now also help him in the day to day operations. Laurent is very demanding and a perfectionist, driven by his passion he is not afraid to break his back doing the job always striving to rich a high standard of quality.

Eighty year old gamay vines rooted in south facing terroir of blue schists and grey granite in decomposition ('roche pourrie' - rotten rocks) with veins of manganese (iron mineral). Hand harvested. Indigenous yeasts. Two week maceration with partial (70-80%) destemmed clusters in gridded wooden vats. Aged 9 months in large foudre

Highly energetic red and blue fruit and floral pastille scents show very good clarity and a hint of smoky minerality. Bright and juicy on the palate, offering sweet black raspberry and boysenberry flavors and a touch of candied lavender. Finishes on a gently tannic note, displaying excellent clarity and building spiciness and leaving behind a suave floral pastille note.
